Reaper by Cockos is not a free DAW.
I added this to the list because this is the one I have for over 15 years

It is free to try for 30 days and then turns into nagware(you have to wait for a bit, to open it).
A license is cheap compared to competitors however.
Windows, Linux, Mac.
Cakewalk is a grandaddy of the Digital Audio Workstations with its origins in the eighties.
Taken over by Bandlab a some years ago, they made it freely available.
Windows only.
This one has been around for ages,
but still updated and looking good and a good free alternative to paid DAW's!
No audio recording capabilities tho.
Linux, Windows & Mac.
This used to be the DAW for Linux users
Recently they've added support for Windows and Mac, but read the instructions included.
